When doing Olympic lifts, you have to generate your force through your heels and they have to be in solid contact with the ground. CrossFit Santa Cruz Central had a link to this video, which illustrates the value of using weight lifting shoes. There are many different brands of weightlifting shoes out there and I don't endorse one over the other but I do own a pair and have found them beneficial.
Other good options when doing lifts is to be barefoot or in socks or Vibram Five Fingers. All ensure you have good contact with the ground and can generate explosive force and all are better options than running shoes.
